Personal Protection Officers

Is a Military Background Essential for Personal Protection Officers?

Individuals with a high social status, influential business acumen, or pivotal government roles often require personal protection officers. They help deter criminals from causing people any harm, and are trained to identify potentially dangerous situations to secure the safety of the person they are protecting. Before we delve into the relevance of a military background for this type of role, it is first important to establish exactly what is meant by a personal protection officer.

What is a personal protection officer?

Most of our personal protection officers have a military background, but that doesn’t mean that this type of background is exclusive where we recruit from.

Here are a few pros and cons of this type of background in this kind of role.

How might a military background help?

  1. Experience in high-risk environments – There is no doubt that officers who have previous experience in dealing with dangerous situations can use that knowledge to help prevent other scenarios from occurring. The ability to work independently and as part of a team that is used to this type of environment provides a pivotal added bonus when it comes to protecting our clients
  2. Disciplined to get the job done – A military background encourages a disciplined individual who will focus on his or her primary objective, which is ensuring your safety
  3. Transferable skills – Quick thinking from a tactical perspective and an ability to work under highly pressurised situations are vital skills that are needed just as much in a personal protection officer as they are in the military

When wouldn’t military training be required?

  1. Special training – All personal protection officers receive specialised treatment from Saladin Security before any task is undertaken, regardless of their background. A Close Protection course is required by all our staff, and this may include lessons to learn that have no relevance to the military, which is why this background is not always needed
  2. Different requirements – Ours is a civilian role, not a military one, so the parameters are often different. You are more likely to operate in a more domestic environment with fewer hostile outcomes than in a military warzone, so your role is likely to be different, which is why your background is sometimes irrelevant
  3. Other personal qualities are required – If you are working in an environment such as one with a highly paid executive, professionalism, a strong mental attitude, friendliness, approachability, trustworthiness, and dedication are the main attributes required. You do not necessarily need a military background to possess these character traits

Do I need a personal bodyguard?

Before working out whether you need one of our personal bodyguards or close protection officers, you need to think about the dangers and exterior factors that could affect you. Have you worked on a business dealing that could affect people negatively? Are there aspects of your job that could lead to the physical harm of yourself and your employees? Could any of your decisions lead to a negative reaction from people who work for you? How high-profile is your role? It is important to ask yourself these questions in the first place.
